Wellbeing and PBL

Wellbeing Structure

Built around the Department of Education Wellbeing Framework.

Promoting Student Wellbeing - Current Initiatives

  • Start of year planned transition processes, in order to lessen anxiety and promote a sense of belonging.

Bundanoon also offers specific programs which promote wellbeing allowing each child/family points of access and a feeling of belonging, regardless of their strengths or weaknesses. These include: Dance to be Fit, student leadership/voice opportunities, music groups, PSSA sport, and Stage 2 and 3 camps.

Wellbeing structure of consequences for negative behaviours

  • Students work best when boundaries are clear and consequences are consistent and fair. Our expectation around behaviour is high, as this allows all students to learn and achieve their best.  The Bundanoon Parent Wellbeing Framework outlines the current consistent consequences that we implement at BPS.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

We have three core expectations at Bundanoon, to be Safe, Respectful, Learners.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture.

The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children.

When PBL is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom teaching and learning.

PBL expectations involve teaching the behaviours that we want to see at Bundanoon – both in the classroom and playground. PBL provides a framework for the school, and its community to support the well-being of every student.

Each fortnight we focus on a specific area around the school and teach the behaviours expected in that area.

PBL addresses the academic and social needs of every student to support them to be successful; using a problem-solving approach that engages students, parents and school staff.

Students can earn 'Oakies' for being Safe, Respectful Learners. When students earn an 'Oakie', they write their name on the back and put it into their Oakie pockets.

A count is kept of 'Oakies' earned and when a student has achieved 10 'Oakies', they are presented with an Oak Tree Award.

The count continues as follows:

  • 5 Oak Tree Awards = Bronze Oak Tree Award
  • 5 Bronze Oak Tree Awards = Silver Oak Tree Award
  • 5 Silver Oak Tree Awards = Gold Oak Tree Award
  • 5 Gold Oak Tree Awards = Principal Oak Tree Award

When students receive their Principal’s Award they will be invited to attend a special morning tea with the Principal.

See our PBL System document for more information.

l. What do students get Oakies for?

Students are given Oakies for a wide range of reasons that demonstrate being a safe, respectful learner in our school. Oakies are given out for much more than just "following the rules", some recent examples of what Oakies were awarded for include:

Politeness in office, Great student journalism, Good sportsmanship, Following instructions, Success Criteria for writing, Taking initiative, Great ideas and public speaking, Being a thoughtful friend/classmate, Helping others when they are sad or hurt, Persistence with tasks, Respect for equipment in the playground, Inviting children to play when someone is left on their own, Using a variety of reading strategies, Respectful assembly manners, Making commitments, Collaboration and teamwork, Reflective, imaginative and thoughtful answers, Listening to Success Criteria and reaching goals.

2Why do we give out Oakies?

Oakies are a tangible reinforcement of verbal feedback given by teachers and other staff members to students. Our teachers have had professional learning in the power of feedback in improving student outcomes and this is what we aim to improve and increase: the quality and quantity of the feedback we give to our students. The Oakies provide teachers and students with a ‘measure' of how much positive verbal feedback is given to each student, the class and in the school as a whole.  Class Merit Awards are still given out and are a valued part of our positive rewards system.

Oakies are a fast and frequent award whereas Class Merit Awards are usually given out to only a few students per class at fortnightly assemblies. On average a student would get two of these written awards per year.

If you have any more questions, comments or queries about PBL, please let us know! You are welcome to do this informally at any time- call in for a chat, send an email or make a call to the school office.

PBL is a journey – from little things, big things grow.

PBL Peg Charts are in all classrooms at Bundanoon Public School. Each student has their name written on a peg which is kept on the chart.  At the beginning of each day, every student starts the day in the green ‘Oakie Zone’ which is when they can be earning Oakies. Teachers can ask students that consistently demonstrate positive behaviour to move their peg up into the ‘Stellar’ or ‘Superstar’ zones. If students reach one of these zones, they receive star Oakies. Stellar Students receive 1 star Oakies and Superstar Students receive 3 star Oakies. These star Oakies then go into a fortnightly raffle. Four lucky students who have been demonstrating our school PBL values will receive a special treat at lunch time in the form of an ice block or hot chocolate.

Alternatively, teachers can also ask students to move their peg down if they are not demonstrating the school PBL values. The PBL peg chart aligns with our school Wellbeing Structure and provides students with a visual reminder to reinforce positive behaviour.
