Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
We have three core expectations at Bundanoon, to be Safe, Respectful, Learners.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture.
The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children.
When PBL is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom teaching and learning.
PBL expectations involve teaching the behaviours that we want to see at Bundanoon – both in the classroom and playground. PBL provides a framework for the school, and its community to support the well-being of every student.
Each fortnight we focus on a specific area around the school and teach the behaviours expected in that area.
PBL addresses the academic and social needs of every student to support them to be successful; using a problem-solving approach that engages students, parents and school staff.
Students can earn 'Oakies' for being Safe, Respectful Learners. When students earn an 'Oakie', they write their name on the back and put it into their Oakie pockets.
A count is kept of 'Oakies' earned and when a student has achieved 10 'Oakies', they are presented with an Oak Tree Award.
The count continues as follows:
- 5 Oak Tree Awards = Bronze Oak Tree Award
- 5 Bronze Oak Tree Awards = Silver Oak Tree Award
- 5 Silver Oak Tree Awards = Gold Oak Tree Award
- 5 Gold Oak Tree Awards = Principal Oak Tree Award
When students receive their Principal’s Award they will be invited to attend a special morning tea with the Principal.
See our PBL System document for more information.
The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM)
Berry Street Education Model – Learning and Resources
The BSEM is a trauma-informed approach designed to support both students and staff in our school community. By understanding the impact of trauma on learning, this model helps create a safe and nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
By fostering strong relationships and promoting resilience, the BSEM empowers our students to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential, while also supporting our staff and school community in creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere.

Circle Time Routine:
Our Circle Time routine is a nurturing practice that supports engagement, builds well-being, and fosters a positive classroom community. As the first consistent and predictable routine of the day, it allows students and teachers to gather, share thoughts, and connect with one another.
Positive Primers:
Positive primers are brief, engaging activities designed to boost positive emotions and prepare students for learning at the beginning of a lesson or school day.
Berry Street Education Model Lessons:
Our weekly lessons are designed to reinforce key concepts and strategies from the BSEM. Each session focuses on specific themes, such as emotional regulation, resilience, and relationship-building. Through engaging activities, discussions, and practical exercises, students learn valuable skills to help them manage their emotions, foster positive interactions, and develop a growth mindset. These lessons aim to equip students with the tools they need to navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom, promoting their overall well-being and success.
Ready to Learn Scale:
We use the Ready to Learn Scale for students to assess their emotional and social readiness to engage in learning activities. This tool allows teachers to identify students’ individual needs and tailor our support accordingly.
Brain Breaks:
To enhance focus and engagement, teachers incorporate Brain Breaks into our daily routines. These short, structured breaks help students reset and refocus to enable our students to be ready to learn.
